Clinical testing of an overall body odor control product

Keynote · In-Person · Day 1

Abstract

About this talk

Body odor is disgusting, unpleasant, unattractive, and is linked to poor hygiene. it is the breakdown of sweat that causes malodor. While deodorant products for combatting axilla odor are in abundance it is the whole-body deodorants that have made recent entry into the market place whose potential needs to be checked.

Our objective was to check a whole-body deodorant for safety, efficacy and acceptability in a randomized blinded, clinical study involving a human sensorial design with assessments carried out by expert odor judges.  Healthy M/F subjects(18-65)y, (n=35)per body area tested were enrolled following written informed consent and study eligibility determination. Odor qualification was conducted by expert judges prior to the control wash. Clean tank tops, pads/jock straps & socks were provided. Supervised washes were conducted prior to TA application.  Expert visual and odor evaluations were conducted of the axilla/ groin/ feet areas. Safety included visual assessments & AE collection. The 17-day study had 10 visits to the site with specified days for TA use and odor qualification of subjects by expert odor judges.

For the first 10 days subjects were only allowed to wash and shave with the unscented soap provided, with no deodorant use. Study restrictions throughout the study included no swimming, hot tub use and restrictions on consuming certain foods.

Our results indicate product efficacy in combatting malodor from axilla, feet and genitals (p<0.05). Subject provided a favourable perception of various product attributes including skin tolerance.

In conclusion, whole-body deodorant showed clinically proven performance for odor control effectiveness with minimum irritation potential and high acceptability. Our study can help back product claims, add value for consumers and help clients in maintaining a competitive edge.
