Title : Gut-Skin Axis: Unravelling the gut connection to atopic skin
Abstract:
Skin is the body’s largest organ, providing first-line of defense against pathogens, environmental insults and interacting with the immune system. Similarly, the gut also serves as the largest interfaces between the host and its environment. Both the skin and the gut provide multiple niches for colonization by diverse microbial communities. These play a pivotal contributor in the maintenance of homeostasis and regulation of immune system and provide multitude of other benefits to the host. Pronounced dysbiosis of gut microbiome has been implicated in several cutaneous diseases including atopic dermatitis. Reduced exposure to a biodiverse environment, especially early in life, is associated with an increased incidence of AD and allergic diseases. Understanding of Gut-Skin-Axis has broadened the scope of newer strategic therapeutic interventions such as probiotics, prebiotics, dietary considerations, faecal matter transplantation and novel treatments in the management of atopic dermatitis.
