Title : Skin deep: Examining the link between skin conditions and mental health disorders
Abstract:
This study examines the correlation between skin conditions and the prevalence of mental health disorders, specifically anxiety and depression. Skin problems and mental health conditions like depression and anxiety often occur together. This connection can be explained by shared pathways in the body, like inflammation and stress responses. Skin conditions can lead to depression and anxiety due to discomfort, changes in appearance, and social stigma. Conversely, depression and anxiety can worsen skin problems by disrupting skin function and increasing inflammation. Managing both skin and mental health together is important for overall well-being. Complementing prior research on the visual and social ramifications of skin ailments, this investigation explores the potential for these conditions to contribute to or exacerbate existing mental health challenges. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining survey data with in-depth interviews to understand the lived experiences of individuals with skin conditions. The study aims to identify specific stressors related to skin appearance that may trigger or intensify anxiety and depressive symptoms, ultimately contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between physical health and mental wellbeing.
