About this talk
Aims and Objectives: Tostudy hospital based incidence of neonatal dermatoses.
To study the clinical pattern of cutaneous lesions during early neonatal period
Materials and Method: Data was collected after obtaining informed consent from parent/ guardian of each neonate up to 28 days of extra-uterine life. The neonates were examined thoroughly and the morphology of skin lesions and findings were recorded. The sex, birth weight, presence of any systemic illness and age at the time of examination were noted in each case. When necessary, Gram’s stains, KOH mount, bacterial culture, maternal blood VDRL was done. The results of the study were tabulated and analyzed.
Result: Out of 100 neonates,54 were males and 46 females. 29 neonates were <2.5 kg, 68 were between 2.5kg to 4kg and 3 were more than 4 kg. 11 pre-term babies, 87 term babies and 2 post term babies. Physiological lesions were seen in 89% cases amongst which Lanugo (46%) was the most common followed by physiological desquamation (40%) then Mongolian spot (38%). Other lesions like transient lesions (20%), inflammatory dermatoses (7%) & infections (2%) were noted. Majority of the neonates had more than one lesion.
Conclusion: Physiological lesions are more common than pathological lesions. Pre-term babies are more prone for developing pathological changes as compared to term and post term babies.
