Title : Improving soft tissue esthetics through clinical management of gingival recession
Abstract:
Gingival recession is a frequently encountered periodontal condition that can compromise both oral function and dental esthetics. Exposure of the root surface may result in dentin hypersensitivity, increased susceptibility to root caries, and concerns related to the appearance of the smile. Modern periodontal therapy extends beyond achieving root coverage, with increasing emphasis on restoring natural soft tissue architecture and ensuring long-term clinical stability.
This presentation will provide an overview of contemporary approaches to the assessment and treatment of gingival recession, highlighting principles that contribute to predictable esthetic outcomes. Topics will include clinical diagnosis, recession classification, evaluation of the periodontal phenotype, and selection of appropriate treatment strategies. Current surgical modalities, including the coronally advanced flap (CAF), connective tissue graft (CTG), and minimally invasive tunnel techniques, will be reviewed, along with the application of microsurgical methods and biologic materials to promote favorable wound healing and improve treatment predictability.
Representative clinical cases involving isolated as well as multiple gingival recession defects will be presented to illustrate treatment planning and therapeutic outcomes. Particular attention will be given to the extent of root coverage achieved, soft tissue contour, color blending with adjacent tissues, esthetic integration, and patient-reported satisfaction. Key determinants of successful outcomes, such as flap management, graft dimensions, tissue handling, and postoperative maintenance, will also be examined.
In summary, effective management of gingival recession requires a multidisciplinary, esthetic-oriented clinical approach supported by sound biological principles and meticulous surgical execution. By combining evidence-based techniques with careful case selection, clinicians can achieve functional rehabilitation while restoring a natural and harmonious gingival appearance.
