Title : Cosmetic applications of coffee grounds and their In vivo assessment in wistar rats

Abstract:

This study aimed to develop an antioxidant slimming cream using coffee grounds and its cosmetic oil, and to evaluate their anti-obesity potential in vivo through dietary incorporation in rats.
The aqueous extract of coffee grounds was prepared using the maceration method, a solid–liquid extraction technique involving hot water as the solvent. For the preparation of coffee grounds oil, coffee grounds were mixed with sweet almond oil, gently heated, and then infused for three weeks in the dark to ensure optimal extraction and preservation of bioactive compounds. This dual extraction approach aqueous and oily aimed to obtain both hydrophilic and lipophilic fractions, maximizing the recovery of the antioxidant and cosmetic potential of coffee grounds. The in vitro findings demonstrated a remarkably high total antioxidant activity, closely associated with the extract’s abundant polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins. Two cosmetic formulations were prepared: one containing coffee ground granules and the other coffee oil. Both exhibited a notable slimming effect, were microbiologically safe, and non-irritating, confirming their dermatological safety and potential as natural cosmetic ingredients. In the in vivo experiment, dietary supplementation with coffee grounds led to a significant reduction in body weight among treated rats. Biochemical analyses revealed decreased serum triglyceride levels, although histological examination of liver tissue indicated mild hepatic alterations, suggesting a need for cautious formulation optimization. Overall, these results highlight the promising antioxidant and slimming potential of coffee grounds and their oil, while emphasizing the importance of further toxicological and histopathological studies to ensure their safety and efficacy in both cosmetic and nutraceutical applications.
