Title : Types and frequencies of therapeutic drugs as cosmetics in university of science and technology during the year 2021–2022

Abstract:

Background and aim: Cosmetic and skincare products are widely consumed worldwide, often exposing users to chemical compounds with potential health risks. In Sudan, the misuse of therapeutic drugs such as corticosteroids, cyproheptadine, and prednisolone for cosmetic purposes has become increasingly common, despite their known adverse effects. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional community-based study was conducted in 2022 at the University of Science and Technology, Khartoum State, to assess the prevalence, frequency, and health risks associated with the cosmetic use of therapeutic drugs. A total of 130 female participants were surveyed using a structured, pretested questionnaire. Results: The findings revealed that the highest proportion of users were between 21–23 years old, with most residing in Omdurman. Only 28% of participants reported using cosmetic drugs, and the majority were irregular users. Beauty enhancement was the primary motive (55%), while a smaller proportion cited attractiveness or other reasons. Although most respondents maintained their weight, the majority did not exercise regularly. Knowledge gaps were evident: 38.7% had limited awareness of the true origin and medical use of these drugs, and over half (52%) recognized their long-term harmful effects, while a minority perceived them as harmless. Reported side effects included increased sleep (34%), striae (18%), hypertension (12%), and skin allergies (8%). Despite these risks, 50% of users did not stop consumption. Conclusion: The study concludes that Sudanese women demonstrate insufficient awareness regarding the origins, proper use, and risks of therapeutic drugs used as cosmetics. Continued misuse and lack of regulatory control pose significant public health concerns. Greater awareness campaigns and stricter regulations are urgently needed to curb the unsafe use of these products.
