Erythema is a medical condition caused by increased blood flow to a localized area of the skin or mucous membrane. It is often associated with inflammation and can range from a pink discoloration to a deep red hue. Typically, the color intensifies with increased blood flow and is relieved with decreased blood flow. Erythema is a very common condition and can be caused by many factors, including exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, irritants, hot or cold temperatures, and certain medications or skin-care products. People with certain diseases, such as diabetes or lupus, may also be more prone to erythema. The primary symptom of erythema is redness of the affected area of skin or mucous membrane. Other associated symptoms can vary, depending on the cause. For example, erythema caused by UV radiation may be accompanied by skin itching and burning. If caused by irritants or certain medications, it may be accompanied by a rash, hives, sneezing, and swelling. Diagnosis is mainly based on the signs and symptoms associated with erythema. A physical exam may also be done to rule out other conditions. If the doctor suspects an underlying medical condition is the cause, they may order blood tests, imaging tests, or biopsies to determine the cause. Treatment may involve applying a topical cream, ointment, or gel, oral or topical medications to reduce inflammation, or phototherapy depending on the cause and severity of the erythema. It is important to talk to a doctor if any redness of the skin or mucous membrane persists or is accompanied by other symptoms. Prompt treatment can help reduce the severity of erythema and help prevent any further or lasting complications.
