Eyelid surgery (or blepharoplasty) is a type of cosmetic surgery procedure designed to improve the overall appearance of either the upper, lower, or both eyelids. It can involve either the removal of excess fatty tissue, skin, and muscle, or, in some cases, the repositioning of the muscle tissue. Many individuals may choose to undergo eye surgery for a variety of reasons, including removing bags and puffiness from the eyes, reducing signs of aging, or improving vision if excess skin of the upper eyelid is present. Additionally, some individuals may choose to undergo eyelid surgery if they have drooping eyelids that interfere with their vision. Most commonly, the eyelid surgery procedure is an outpatient procedure that typically lasts between one and three hours. All procedures are performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on the patient, either local or topical anaesthesia may be used. During the procedure, an incision follows the natural contours of the eyelid to reduce visible scars. After the tissue is manipulated or removed, the incision is closed with sutures or skin adhesives. Certain techniques can also be used to rotate excess skin away from the eye or to insert fat in order to build an upper eyelid crease, if desired. Most patients experience minimal discomfort or pain after a successful eyelid surgery, but some swelling, bruising, and fatigue can expected initially. Additionally, the patient may experience watery eyes or sensitivity to light for up to several weeks. Vision may also be slightly impaired by swelling of the eyelids initially, but normal vision returns as the swelling subsides. On average, the results from eyelid surgery can last for many years, depending on the individual’s skin and healing. However, the ageing process may eventually make some of the signs appear again, and follow-up procedures may be required for maintenance. Overall, eyelid surgery is a popular cosmetic procedure, particularly as a way to restore a youthful, refreshed look. It can be used to reduce puffiness, reduce signs of aging, and improve vision. Additionally, most patients experience minimal discomfort and an easy recovery.
