Green nail syndrome is a rare nail infection that is caused by the presence of the fungus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This infection results in nails that change in color and texture and may become thickened, discolored, and brittle. Also known as chloronychia, green nail syndrome is primarily seen in people who have occupations in which they are in frequent contact with water. In addition, people with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of developing the disorder. Green nail syndrome occurs when Pseudomonas aeruginosa infects the area underneath the nail at the cuticle. This type of infection results in discoloration of the nail to a dark green or black color. Affected nails may change in thickness and become brittle due to the presence of the fungus. Other symptoms include swelling of the nail bed and an offensive-smelling discharge. Treatment for green nail syndrome usually involves antibiotics to kill the fungus and reduce any associated symptoms. This includes topical creams or oral medications that must be used for 2 to 4 months in order to ensure the infection is completely eliminated. In addition, affected nails should be trimmed regularly to provide relief from nail thickness and to promote healthier growth. The most important prevention method for green nail syndrome is to avoid prolonged contact with water. This includes showering and swimming for extended periods of time, as well as regularly wearing gloves when washing dishes or engaging in other activities that require frequent contact with water. In addition, it is important to see a dermatologist for regular checkups in order to catch any potential infections, such as green nail syndrome, early on.
