Yellow Nail Syndrome (YNS) is a rare medical disorder that primarily affects the nails of the fingers and toes. It is characterized by yellow discoloration and thickening of the nails of the digits due to accumulation of endothelial cells, which results in abnormal hardening and increased curvature. The exact cause of YNS is unknown, but it is thought to be due to an underlying lymphatic disorder, such as lymphatic malformation or lymphocytic leukocytosis. It is believed that the excessive accumulation of endothelial cells in the nail bed leads to the typical yellowish discoloration of the nail plate. Patients with YNS typically experience pain and discomfort due to the abnormal thickening and curling of their nails. Additionally, those affected by the condition may experience peels and ridging of the nail from the presence of the hardening cells. In some cases, nails may become so thick they impede one’s ability to wear footwear normally. There is no universal treatment for YNS, but some common treatments focus on softening the nails and reducing their thickness. A dermatologist may recommend medications such as topical antifungal agents, intralesional triamcinolone, retinoids, and oral steroids. Additionally, light curettage of the nails and laser ablation can be used to remove the thickened cells. Although YNS is rare, people of any age or gender can be affected. If you or a family member is experiencing yellow discoloration and thickening of the nails, seeing a dermatologist for evaluation may be beneficial. Even though there is no known cure, there are treatments that can provide relief and improve nail aesthetics.
